When Goldfish Beat Humans

We've been beaten by goldfish.

That's right - thousands of years of evolution and the result? Goldfish have an attention span of 9 seconds, yet according to research by Microsoft, our generation of humans can only manage 8.

Close your eyes, and count to 8. Don't let anything distract you. Stop reading for a moment and ignore that whatsapp that just came through.

It's hard, isn't it?

Taking the time to refocus ourselves is mindfulness - which forms part of OneCoWork Head of Sales Jesse Derkx's not-so-secret passion for psychology and understanding how our brains work.

Our brains control our bodies; how we think affects how we feel. Ever been so nervous, you felt nauseous? Ever called in sick to work and ended up actually unwell? Has a particular sight ever made you feel dizzy and unbalanced?

If we reclaim control of our mentality, we reclaim control of our bodies. The same also applies to another of Jesse's passions - wine. Together with Blend and Bottled's Claartje van den Bogaard, OneCoWork were delighted to host a sold-out mindful wine tasting in Plaça Catalunya on Wednesday. 

If I were to ask you to tell me about the last time you drank wine, you'll probably tell me who you were with, which bar you were at (or which fluffy jumper you were curled up in at home), what the atmosphere was like and what the occasion was.

But would you - could you - tell me what the wine smelled like? How it tasted when the first drop touched your lips? How did it make you feel?

In this session, we took the skills of mindfulness to focus on and appreciate our wine for a moment. By absorbing the full sensation, we were able to unlock a new level of perception of the wine.

Of course, we followed up with mixing and mingling with our friends and colleagues over the rest of the wine!
